Alexander Wilson
Biography
Alexander Wilson holds the position of Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Grand Valley State University.
Prior to this appointment, Wilson served as as Visiting Professor of Trumpet at GVSU for two years. He is also doctoral candidate at Arizona State University under David Hickman, and expects to graduate Spring 2017. Wilson holds a Master of Music degree from Arizona State University and earned his Bachelor of Music degree at Grand Valley State University under its previous trumpet professor, Richard Stoelzel.
An active soloist and orchestral musician, Wilson performed solos on two national tours with the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra, at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. He also toured through North America and Asia in a pit orchestra with the Shen Yun Performing Arts. During his studies, he soloed with the GVSU Symphony Orchestra and the ASU Wind Orchestra, and took Second Place in both the Undergraduate Solo and Graduate Solo divisions of the National Trumpet Competition (NTC). Wilson also played in the GVSU ensemble that took First Place in the trumpet ensemble division of NTC in 2008, and plans to continue the Grand Valley tradition of sending ensembles to the annual competition. He performed a solo at the 2013 International Trumpet Guild Conference, and has recently soloed with the Laker Marching Band at GVSU and released his first solo CD, Volti Subito.
As an orchestral musician, Wilson played with the Arizona Opera, subbed extensively with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, and now performs occasionally in the trumpet section of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. He also won the 2010 ITG Orchestral Excerpts Competition and the audition for the Boise Philharmonic’s 2nd trumpet position in 2014.
