Bruch and Clarke both mastered the challenge of pairing the viola and clarinet and used the combination of two alto voices much as Brahms had in a symphonic and chamber music setting.

The two instruments in the same range and tone color create complex overtones, resulting in what sounds like a new, third instrument: viola/clarinet.
